SONG STUDY 6. TO GOD BE THE GLORY

SONG STUDY (6) TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

Fanny Crosby 1820-1915
This is another of Fanny Crosby's hymns. She is responsible for many of the songs in our hymn books. She was blind physically, but far seeing spiritually.

To God be the glory! Great things He hath done!
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
And opened the life-gate that all may go in.
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the                 Son;
And give Him the glory, great things He                 hath done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of                    blood!
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon                             receives.

Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the                 Son:
But purer and higher and greater will be
Our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we                   see!

 Verse 1
 (a) Understanding the words: glory, yielded, atonement, “life-gate”.
 (b) What are some of the great things God has done? See Psalm 98:1-4 and
Job 42:1-2. What has He done for you?
 (c) “So loved he the world ...” Where is this Scripture found?
 (d) “atonement for sin” See Romans 5:9-11.

Chorus
  a) “Praise the Lord!” is the same as “Hallelujah!” It’s common in the Psalms, especially 146-150. See also Psalm 29:3-9.
 (b) “through Jesus the Son”. Where is this Scripture found?
 (c) Why give glory to God and not to the Son? After all, isn’t Jesus the one who died for us? See John 8:49-50, John 11:4, John 13:30-32, John 17:1 and 5.

Verse 2
(a) Understanding the words: redemption, purchase, vilest, offender, pardon.
 (b) “perfect redemption” and “purchase of blood”.      See1 Peter 1:18-19, Ephesians 1:7, Revelation 5:9-10. Explain these things in your own words.
 (c) What is the promise of God to every believer?
 (d) What Scriptures can you quote to support that? See Colossians 1:13-14, Isaiah 55:6-7, I Timothy 1:12-17.

Verse 3
(a) Understanding the words: rapture (transport in some versions of the hymn).
 (b) Why is seeing Jesus an even greater cause for delight than being saved from sin? See 1 John 3:2.
 (c) Some will see Him as Lord and Saviour and some will see Him as a Judge passing sentence. See Daniel 12:2-3, Malachi 3:16-18, Matthew 25:31-34 and 41. How will you see Him?

SONG STUDY (1) INTRODUCTION - BIBLE STUDIES BASED ON HYMNS AND SONGS The words in most hymns and Christian songs often contain quotes from the Bible and these are frequently taken from the King James (Authorised) translation. Because of changes in word meanings since the seventeenth century, modern singers frequently have only a vague understanding of what the song writer meant. Even songs being written today use difficult words and ideas. There is a tendency to use what may be called "Christian jargon", which may be meaningful to some and meaningless to others. Stuart Townend (1963 -) It is assumed that the reader has a copy of the Bible on hand. There are many modern translations around; the writer uses the NIV (New International Version). Song Study 12: Meekness and Majesty

Song Study (12) MEEKNESS AND MAJESTY This is a modern hymn by Graham Kendrick (UK), written in 1986. Like the earlier hymns we have examined, it is based on Scripture and contains some difficult words. The message of the song is “ When God became man in the form of Jesus he came as a servant. This is what he expects of us too. ” Rather than a series of questions, let’s look at a series of “key Scriptures” to help us understand what this means and how we are to respond to God’s grace.  Meekness and Majesty:  Meekness And Majesty - Graham Kendrick Lyric Video - YouTube                                Meekness and majesty, Manhood and Deity, In perfect harmony, The Man who is God.
