SONG STUDY (23) : CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY

      Charles Wesley

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Alleluia!
Christ hath burst the gates of hell, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

King of glory, Soul of bliss, Alleluia!
Everlasting life is this, Alleluia!
Thee to know, Thy power to prove, Alleluia!
Thus to sing and thus to love, Alleluia!

A typical rendition of this beautiful hymn:  Christ the Lord is Risen Today!

This hymn of Wesley’s dates from the earliest days of the “Wesleyan” church, in 1739. Some of the verses appear to go back to the 14th century. It has been sung at Easter Day services ever since Wesley’s time.

  1. Understanding the words: Alleluia, triumphs, redeeming, seal, hell, soar, exalted, bliss.
  2. Verse 1. These words echo many passages in the Psalms e.g. Psalm 148.
  3. Verse 2. What is meant by “love’s redeeming work is done”? See John 19:30, Hebrews 9:14, Ephesians 5:1-2 and 1 John 4:10-11.
  4. What were the fight and the battle? See 1 John 3:8.
  5. What are the “stone, the watch, the seal”? See Matthew 27:62-28:4.
  6. What does “Christ hath burst the gates of hell” mean? See Matthew 16:18, Revelation 1:18 and 1 Peter 3:18-22.
  7. Verse 3. For the victory over death and the grave see 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 and Hosea 13:14.
  8. Verse 4 asserts that our resurrection is the result of Christ’s resurrection. This is what Paul says so confidently in 1 Corinthians 15. See especially 20-23 and 50-56.
  9. Verse 5. What does the writer say everlasting life is? See John 17:1-3.

SONG STUDY (1) INTRODUCTION - BIBLE STUDIES BASED ON HYMNS AND SONGS The words in most hymns and Christian songs often contain quotes from the Bible and these are frequently taken from the King James (Authorised) translation. Because of changes in word meanings since the seventeenth century, modern singers frequently have only a vague understanding of what the song writer meant. Even songs being written today use difficult words and ideas. There is a tendency to use what may be called "Christian jargon", which may be meaningful to some and meaningless to others. Stuart Townend (1963 -) It is assumed that the reader has a copy of the Bible on hand. There are many modern translations around; the writer uses the NIV (New International Version). Song Study 12: Meekness and Majesty

Song Study (12) MEEKNESS AND MAJESTY This is a modern hymn by Graham Kendrick (UK), written in 1986. Like the earlier hymns we have examined, it is based on Scripture and contains some difficult words. The message of the song is “ When God became man in the form of Jesus he came as a servant. This is what he expects of us too. ” Rather than a series of questions, let’s look at a series of “key Scriptures” to help us understand what this means and how we are to respond to God’s grace.  Meekness and Majesty:  Meekness And Majesty - Graham Kendrick Lyric Video - YouTube                                Meekness and majesty, Manhood and Deity, In perfect harmony, The Man who is God.
