SONG STUDY (25): TRUST AND OBEY
Daniel Brink Towner JH Sammis
1.
When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Chorus
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
2.
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.
3.
But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favour He shows and the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
4.
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
This hymn gives a simple, clear explanation of living the Christian life. The title expression was used in a testimony meeting, following an evangelistic crusade in Brockton, Massachusetts, by Dwight Lyman Moody . A young man stood to speak, and it soon became clear he knew little Christian doctrine. But he finished by saying, “I’m not quite sure—but I’m going to trust, and I’m going to obey.”
Daniel Towner, who was in the meeting, jotted down the words, and gave them to John Sammis, who developed the lyrics from them. 1887.
Questions
1. Understanding the words: sheds, burden, altar, bestows.
2. Walking in the light of his word. What does this mean? See Psalm 119:105, Isaiah 50:10 and 2 Peter 1:19.
3. “While we do His good will”. What happens if we don’t? See John 15:1-8.
4. While the words “trust and obey” don’t appear in Scripture, the principle is well and truly there.
See Romans 5:1-5.
5. Verse 2 tells us that Jesus is concerned about every part of our lives and is able to help us in all circumstances. See 1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 11:28-30 and Philippians 4:10-13.
6. Verse 3 suggests that there are 2 kinds of Christians. What are they, and is this really true?
See Romans 12:1-2, Psalm 31:13-20 and Jonah 2:1-10.
7. The final verse is about what awaits the believer in heaven. What does it suggest we will be doing? What does the Scripture say will be happening then? See Revelation 5:13, 7:9, 14-17, 19:6-8, 21:1-4 and 21:1-5.
